A Parisian Antique Shop To Love: l’Objet qui Parle
Last September, I returned to Paris with the primary purpose of rowing through the City of Love. And a few days after fulfilling that dream, I happily achieved another. For I happened to chance upon the captivating Parisian antique shop or brocante: l’Objet qui Parle.
A Stroll Through Montmartre
I had spent a sunny afternoon strolling through the rambling streets of Montmartre. If you’re familiar with the enchanting movie Amelie, you will likely recognize this neighbourhood with the shining Sacre Cœur at its heart. After saying a little prayer in the Basilica, I made my way to visit Le Mur de Je t’aime – The ‘I Love You’ Wall – in Place des Abbesses. And I even think I caught sight of Amelie, in her signature red dress, as I passed by the Art Nouveau entrance to the Metro.
A Vintage Curiosity Shop
Then, as I wandered homeward bound down the mount, another ray of light caught my eye. It was the bright yellow sign of l’Objet qui Parle – The Talking Object. I was thrilled! For I had seen posts about this treasure shop on Pinterest over the past few years. And now I had the chance to explore its bounty in person. So I approached it, the eclectic array of antiques tumbling out of its door drawing me in.
Treasures Galore
From the wooden angel wings and enamel hotel room numbers to the religious medallions and gilded trays, the selection was mesmerizing. Then a peak inside the door promised an even wider cache of riches. So of course, I had to enter. And as I stepped over the threshold of this tiny magasin – shop – its vast array of offerings overwhelmed me. From intriguing marionettes to silver clocks to children’s toys, there wasn’t an inch of space left empty. I had to stop for a minute and take a breath before exploring further.
A Collector’s Dream
After doing so, I did my best to absorb the fantastical world of curiosities that surrounded me. And while a selection of antique buttons caught my eye, it was the china that captured my heart. Especially their selection of blue and white café au lait bowls. I couldn’t resist purchasing one to add to my collection. One more perusal of des objects – the objects – lead me to this pearl of a plate. Both its sweet design and unique colouring sealed the deal for me. And as I was paying for my purchases, le marchand – the shopkeeper – offered me one more gem: their business card.
I parted this fascinating Parisian antique shop with a smile on my face and a vow to return. Next time, perhaps, for a selection of their vintage wallpaper.
