Galler: A Belgian Chocolate Factory Outlet

I could smell the chocolate before we even opened the door. Its luscious scent wafted around us as we approached the entrance of the Galler Chocolatiers Factory Outlet. It gently guided us inside, we willing participants in this little shopping spree. My companions and I had just finished a week-long rowing tour of northern France and southern Belgium. And now we were being shuttled by one of their fathers to his home in Liège. Here we would spend the night before going our separate ways. But first, it was time to partake in what I gathered was somewhat of a local family tradition: chocolate shopping at the Galler factory outlet.Galler Chocolatier Factory Outlet Entrance Sign: L'Abeille Française

The air-conditioned shop was a greatly appreciated reprieve from the 35 degree Celsius plus, July weather we had just spent the better part of a week in. And the vast array of chocolate that spread out before us, if somewhat overwhelming, was also welcome. For we were greeted by bins and bins of large packages of chocolate seconds at amazing prices.Bags of orange and purple wrapped Galler chocolate seconds: L'Abeille Française Galler Package of the Day Sign offering 4 kilograms of chocolates for 35 euros: L'Abeille Française

And beyond those, shelves of Galler’s beautifully packaged premier products.

As I browsed, I quickly realized that the air conditioning wasn’t for the customers alone. Belgian’s take their chocolate seriously and part of ensuring a quality product is maintaining it at the proper temperature. To the point where they list the temperature specifications on their packaging. They even go so far as to sell ice packs and insulated bags to help you maintain those levels once you leave the shop. During the coming week, I was to discover that this is standard in Belgian chocolate shops when I took a chocolate walking tour of Brussels. And I’ve since noticed that at least one shop local to me in Toronto, SOMA Chocolatemaker, does the same.Bulk package of Galler chocolate bar seconds: L'Abeille Française

And if not already on a sugar high from this multitude of sweets, as I approached the cashier, a decadent  smorgasbord of pralines and macarons spread out before me.

The ironic part of this visit is that I didn’t actually taste any of Galler’s goodies until last month. You see, I gave the products I purchased that day away as gifts. Karma smiled on me though. I received my own bundle of Galler treats at my rowing section’s Christmas re-gifting party and have been savouring them ever since. For with good quality chocolate, a little goes a long way.A selection of Galler chocolates: L'Abeille Française
